Playing to the masses
Senator Feingold on Fox News Sunday this morning.
What a load of hooey! From Mark Kilmer's summary of the interview:
...a Dem Presidential aspirant who is on a personal publicity crusade. He is making noise about censuring the President, of course, whom he says has no "legal leg to stand on." He said that "one party rule" is bad for this country; as proof, he pointed out that the Republicans in Congress now are not standing up to the President in the way that Republicans stood up to President Nixon during Watergate.
The Nixon comparison was one thing, but Russ also compared the President to England's erstwhile King George III and declared: "This is the very reason we had the Revolution in our country!" ("One if by land, two if by sea, hang up because al Qaeda is on Line Three.")
Wallace pointed out that the Administration had asked for changes in the law early in the program but the Congress members alerted had refused. Feingold said that only a few members had been told about the wiretap program and those were not allowed to talk about it. The whole Intelligence Committee should have been told.
The President "has to admit that he went to far," Feingold challenged.
So Feingold knew what the program was, what the President has actually done? Well, Feingold offered that he has "been briefed to some degree," but he insists that the full Senate Intelligence Committee should be told.
Does Russ have any evidence that any civil rights have been violated? No, but Russ insists that it is clear that "there is no legal basis" for the program.
"What kind of message does this end to our kids?" Feingold asked. "What have we come to? What are we?"
"What are we!?" We're just what Mark pointed out; we're a lone Senator on a publicity crusade.
Huzzah!
