I'm right and I'm going to crow about it!
I've blogged about Phoenix's perceived traffic woes before. To recap, I don't think these people know what they're talking about. But we're not here to discuss my competency or understanding of the issue.
What we are here to discuss is how I'm right! A new insurance-claim study reveals that Phoenix is one of the safest big-cities to drive in: Phoenix drivers are the least likely to suffer an accident compared with drivers in eight other U.S. cities with populations over 1 million, according to a new insurance-claim study.
Phoenix drivers average only one accident every 10 years, the study says.
Based on the numbers they cite you can't really argue it. Despite what my eyes tell me about the way people drive here, it appears to be true. So how does this relate to my disdain at Phoenician's whining about how long it takes them to get to work?
A bit deeper we find this nugget: It's all about density, says traffic expert Allan Williams, a recently retired researcher with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. And despite Phoenix-area drivers' complaints about traffic jams, the Valley is still relatively wide-open when it comes to traffic density, Williams said.
Heh!

Couple of notes from a former Glendalian:
1. If it's such a safe city, why are auto insurance rates so high? The answer lies in the fact that so many Desert Scrubs love to tool around the desert irresponsibly and find themselves in overturned cars, etc.
2. The Valley has radically improved when it comes to traffic. Completion of the 101 and the Squaw Peak represent major improvements.
3. You want gridlock? LOL Gridlock isn't even allowed to be mentioned until you have "Don't Block the Box" signs at every intersection.
I used to give away 15 hours a week to the traffic monster in LA.
These people don't have a clue...
Try Austin. 15 min traffic jams get panties in a wad.
