No Target
If this holds up, the howling will be deafening. After all, Rove is the devil.
"The special counsel has not advised Mr. Rove that he is a target of the investigation and affirmed that he has made no decision concerning charges," Rove's attorney Robert Luskin said in a statement.
"The special counsel has indicated that he does not anticipate the need for Mr. Rove's further cooperation," the statement said.
As I noted here and here, something is rotten in Rove-is-evil-incarnate world. As the Special Prosecutor ought to be closing in ever more surely on indicting Rove for his masterminding of the conspiracy to unmask Valerie Plame (though frankly, it seems she needs no help in that department) to punish her husband Joe Wilson, we see anything but. When we ought to be seeing the noose tightening around Rove's neck, instead we get a broadening of the investigation and more interviews with Miller and Rove as well as details about previously unkown conversations with Scooter Libby. But nothing that is pointing at the devil as the ultimate target.
If it in turn is announced that Rove is not indicted, the baying of the wolves will be so loud, so long and so mournful that it may surpass all that has come before it. And I will laugh at the ones who have been so sure for so long that the culprit was so obvious. How dumb of me not to see it…
