You think you're funny...

But you're not!

Last night's episode of Joey contained two--not one but two!--jokes about the alma-mater. Now, I'm all for free publicity, but within reason!

To start, neighbor Alex represents Michael in a mediation effort with his friend Seth over intellectual property rights. Seth is upset that Michael has dragged a lawyer into the middle of this dispute.

"Well, is she a real lawyer? Where did you go to law-school?"

"Pepperdine."

"Pffft. See!? She's not even a real lawyer!"

Later, Joey is brought in as a witness to a hearing with Seth and his lawyer and Alex and Michael. The nature of his testimony is unclear to start with but soon becomes evident to Seth and his lawyer that he is bluffing about what he knows of this dispute. In the course of the discussion Seth again takes an easy shot when wondering aloud if Joey is so smart that he went to Pepperdine.

I just don't see the humor...

Not to rub salt in the wound, but when I was looking into grad schools I considered Pepperdine's international MBA program.

I was longing for a return to the Left Coast and the picture of the ocean view from the campus on the cover of the prospectus was seductive, to be sure. So I went to a recruiting event sponsored by the school at a country club in Dallas.

I had a good time, met some alums, met other prospectives, learned about the school (more about their infamous Law School than my program, but no matter...). Anyway, at the end of all the conviviality, some bigwig from the school got up and spoke about the school and the various programs. However, I was distressed by the fact that this guy went on ad nauseum about the success of the tennis team. His discussion of the team went to such an extent that I wondered what that said about the school. Now of course, I know Pepperdine is an excellent school with a solid reputation. But as an impressionable recruit, that night I chose not to apply to Pepperdine primarily on the basis of the strength of their tennis program.

Of course, I now wonder what percentage of Pepperdine alums watch shows like "Joey."

It's my wife's fault. If not for her nefarious influence, I'd never have started watching NBC on Thursday nights.

Yeah, that's the ticket!

She, by the way, went to a small Baptist University...
