Syria, Lebanon and the push for democracy
Syrian filmmaker Omar Amiralay says, "A Syrian withdrawal is inevitable. History is on the move and nobody can halt its progress." Is Mr. Amiralay prescient, or does his attitude represent the majority of Lebanese citizens? I don't know. I will say though, that as a citizen of Lebanon living under decades of oppressive Syrian influence, his words are stirring, surprising and very, very encouraging!
The very fact that ordinary citizens such as Omar are standing up and saying such things in and of itself is astonishing! Syria has for all intents-and-purposes run this country for decades and I feel confident in saying that nobody was expecting change there coming now and so quickly!
Instapundit, Hugh Hewitt, PubliusPundit, Captain's Quarters, and numerous others are keeping a close eye on developments. In the process, they add lots of good analysis to the mix.
UPDATE: Just found this time-line that chronicles how we got to today. Had I seen it earlier, I'd have included it in the original post.
